In January this year, the Canoa Solar Park was inaugurated in the Dominican Republic. The plant is located in the municipality of Vicente Noble, near Barahona.
Axial Structural Solutions was the company selected for the design and manufacture of ground mounting systems for this project. Structural Solutions according to the special conditions of the project. Axial’s Technical Department has worked to adapt the structures to support particularly high wind loads since the project is located in a hurricane zone. In addition to this, the implantation of special foundation screws was necessary to adapt the structure to the specific soil characteristics.
The 25 MW solar power plant covers an area of 325 thousand 109 square meters, and will supply energy to more than 30 thousand homes. Renewable energy from Canoa Solar Plant will avoid the emission of more than 21,193 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere and the reduction of 12,850 barrels of oil per year. In the future, Canoa’s capacity can be expanded up to 50 MW.
Axial Structural Solutions has executed this project for its customer Elecnor. The operation of the plant is borne by Potentia Renewables, through its common subsidiary Emerald Solar Energy.
Canoa Solar is part of the Plan to Support Renewable Energy Projects, promoted by the Dominican Corporation of State Electric Companies. According to the executive director of the National Energy Commission, Ángel Canó, the Dominican Republic is listed as an avant-garde nation of renewable energies in the Caribbean region. In the report presented at the General Assembly (IRENA), the Dominican Republic tops the list of countries with the highest installed capacity.
